Welcome, authors! As a freelance editor with more than 12 years of experience, I'm here to help you make your book the best it can be before you take your next step on the publication journey, whether that's submitting to agents and editors or self-publishing your novel. As an agented author myself, I've been where you are, and I know how daunting the task of polishing your work to the point where it's ready to be seen by the world feels.
My career in publishing spans both sides of the editorial desk, which means I know what it feels like as an author to receive feedback, especially about what's not working. That's why I always phrase my edits gently--and point out what you're doing right as well as what needs work. However, I also know that ignoring problems never helped anyone, so I won't hold back from flagging the areas that need work, whether they are huge, manuscript-wide issues, or smaller, single-scene (or even single-sentence) problems. My editorial philosophy is truth with kindness.
Because I am blessed to do what I love and love what I do, I limit my editorial work to genres I enjoy reading. This not only keeps me happy but also serves you well--these are the genres I know inside out. Plus, I'll be eager to talk up your book when it's out in the world.
Fiction genres: middle grade and young adult (any genre), Christian/inspirational romance, sweet romance, science fiction, fantasy, historical
Nonfiction genres: children's, Christian nonfiction, devotionals, Bible studies, biography, history
For all genres, no excessive profanity or gratuitous violence/sex. Please understand that for reasons of scheduling or interest level, I may decline to edit a book at my discretion.
If your book falls into one of the genres above, please read on for a description of my editorial services and rate ranges. Exact rate will be determined after I review a sample of your writing.
Substantive (Content) Edit
Also called a developmental edit, the substantive edit looks at the manuscript as a whole to address big-picture issues, including plot, characterization, setting, story arc and structure, narrative tension, and voice. This is the place to start if you're not sure if your story is working. You'll receive a detailed editorial letter, as well as numerous in-text notes using the comments feature of your preferred software (Microsoft Word, Google Docs, or Scrivener). Most documents will have several hundred comments, not because I want to discourage or overwhelm you but because I don't believe in leaving any potential improvements on the table. Don't worry, I'll offer suggestions for how to fix areas that need work. And a fair number of my comments will be along the lines of "I love this!" or "Yes!" Or "More please!"
Want to get a better feel for my editing style? Check out this sample [one or more? Commissioned comments, crit letter (Kelly), Heather comments & Heather comments (maybe combine), note to Cass].
