I grew up in a semi-rural area of eastern Wisconsin, where my neighbors included my best friend, numerous cows, and deserted roads perfect for long bike rides. When I wasn't exploring the little rivulets made by melting snow, playing travel agent with my sister (no, seriously), fishing with my dad, or shopping with my mom, I was likely reading. Or writing.
In fourth grade, I had the opportunity to work with a real, live author to edit a story I had written and then to sell it as part of our school's book fair. It was my first foray into publishing, and I loved it. But I never anticipated becoming a real, live author myself. Fast forward a few (or more) years, though, and here I am! My first nonfiction book was published in 2006, and 200+ more have followed. I love learning new things for every book I write - it's like I get to stay in school forever! And I love shaping what I have learned into books that are fun and informative for young readers.
These days, I live in a not-quite-so-rural area of eastern Wisconsin with my husband, four children, two cats, a growing collection of fish, and various bugs my children have "rescued" from the outdoors. When I am not writing, I can generally be found wrangling children or animals. Sometimes I try to wrangle the weeds growing in my garden, too, with varying degrees of success. When all my wrangling is done for the day, I still like to sit down with a good book.
